LOS AMANTES DE TERUEL

Los Amantes de Teruel is a celebration of the contradictions of life. This full-length solo that will be performed by Marta herself, is about the universal conflict between ideals and reality; change and tradition; past and present – a conflict that always comes back and only knows temporary solutions. The search to resolve these conflicts is what gives life its dynamics and development.

The central metaphor in the performance is Los Amantes de Teruel, a medieval Spanish story about the love between Juan and Isabel that is suppressed by the rules and traditions of their families and society. This story is said to be the source for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In her performance, Marta uses her own past as a dancer in the ballet Romeo and Juliet, in which she danced many different characters.

Marta danced with the Dutch National Ballet for ten years when she decided to leave her classical past in search of new challenges, becoming a modern dancer and finding her own way of expression through choreography. Another ten years on, she looks back at all these experiences and merges them with her present ones. Los Amantes de Teruel is a performance where classical ballet, modern dance and theatre challenge each other.  It is a performance that embraces life, not only because it is beautiful, but also because it is ugly.
